Tokyo Sushi

Tokyo Sushi
971 Eglinton Avenue West

OK, I’ll admit it. This update was brought to you by laziness and my desire to play with my new camera. I didn’t really feel like cooking tonight and there are only so many pictures you can take of your cats before they get irritated with you and start scowling. So the felines were fed, a jacket thrown on, and off I went to the place down the street from my apartment.

Apparently “Tokyo Sushi” is a chain of sorts. There are 2 locations on Eglinton Ave West alone. But this one is the closest, and it’s my go-to place when I get the urge and don’t feel like walking very far. As an added bonus, the prices are very reasonable and while it’s a small restaurant it’s clean and attractively decorated. Plus the people running the operation are nice. It seems to be a couple running the show with a bit of help.

Rather than go with my “usual” here I decided to try some new stuff for the sake of the site and my own palate. Heck, if I don’t mix things up as much as I can I’ll get sick of sushi pretty darn quick. Besides, whats life without a little bit of variety? This time around I wasn’t ravenous so I stuck with a “fast food” sort of order. Edamame, a coke, and a Spicy Crab Crunch roll. Reading over the menu I noticed a liberal use of crab sticks, moreso than usual. I’ll chalk that up to knowing thier clientele. Eglinton West is predominantly Jewish, and shrimp/crab/lobster aren’t kosher. No worries though. As long as there is sushi on the menu, I’ll find something I like.

The roll was quite good, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed. It was basically 2 crab sticks, and some tempura bits. About every other piece had “spicy” in it, but it was inconsistent. I was curious as to what made it spicy, it wasn’t the tempura, but I wasn’t about to pick apart a piece just to find out. But it was very well rolled and generous with the ingedients. A pair of nice fat sticks of “crab” and a real mess of tempura. For a whopping $4.95 you get your moneys worth.

Definitely in the “budget” category as opposed to fine dining, but you can’t go wrong with low prices and good food. I probably won’t be visiting as much as I normally do as I’m trying to visit as many places as possible, but when company is over and it’s time for a little local nosh, Tokyo Sushi will always be at the top of my list of suggestions.
