Sushi 2 Go
414 Queen St. West
Every Thursday or Friday I get together with my “sister” Laura. She is just as enthusiastic about this new site as I am, and since “Sushi is summer food” in her words, she’s right there with me at least once a week checking out a new restaurant. Since we both work around Queen West, and there is a plethora of places to choose from, it’ll be some time before we run out of places to visit.
This week it was a place just west of Spadina called “Sushi 2 Go”. Apparently there are 4 locations, a couple of which are within the downtown core and might get a visit from me in the future. But for now, Queen St. it is. I’ve actually eaten here before and was pleased with what I got so it was an easy choice to make.
Laura is vegan, which means she doesn’t eat any animal related product. She’s about 2 steps away from not eating anything that casts a shadow and might even be into pocket mulching. So while I go for traditional fare, I’m always scanning the menus for something she can eat. This time around she went with a CAA roll ($5.95) which is Cucumber, Asparagus, and Avocado. You won’t catch me having something like that, I can’t stand asparagus. However I might try the Yasai (vegetable tempura roll) in the future.
We take turns picking up the tab for lunch, so since it was her turn I went straight for the “Funky Rolls” section of the menu. While I was tempted to grab the most expensive food stuffed with the second most expensive, Lobster stuffed with tacos wasn’t keeping with the theme. However, the Rainbow Roll ($11.95) which is a california roll topped with assorted fish and avocado did catch my eye. I’ve had rolls in the past that were topped with fish, but this was “over the top”. The generous portions of what could easily be called Sashimi on the roll justified the price tag. No paper thin strips, these were at least 1/4″ thick.
The food arrived quickly, but the wait staff was a little inattentive. I’d chalk it up to inexperience over anything else. Besides, we both have to learn to linger a bit and enjoy a full stomach. This is another place I’d easily give a thumbs up to. Nothing fancy, but as it’s a new restaurant everything is neat, new, and shiny. Nice place at a good price!
(With apologies for the gratuitous Simpsons references.)

Admittedly, some of the pieces of CAA had some “woody” end pieces of asparagus, which made me like the rolls less and the Wakame (seaweed and glass noodle salad) more, for me.
Considering the name of the place has “to go” in it, I felt as if the service was slow, but being in my “brother’s” company and just enjoying lunch is good.
I’ve walked past this place som many times, but never actually dared walking in because it’s always deserted! Since Aji Sai across the street is always packed and I didn’t have a good experience there I’ve always wondered where that leaves Sushi2Go place. Surely couldn’t be good… :/
Maybe now I’ll pluck up my courage and walk in! :)
This place is now under new management and is called To-Ne Sushi. Wonder how it’s influenced the food and service at this point?
