3022 Bathurst St.

OK, I’m on vacation this week. In the interest of keeping debt levels down I decided that I would use this week to get some projects around the house done. Get a few episodes of my radio show in the can, and go out for sushi every day of the week. What? Every day of the week? Yep, you’ve heard me right. It’s a monday to friday extravaganza.

Today I decided that folr my first day I’d just walk over to Yonge st and do a bit of a wander. So i put on my shoes, grabbed my camera and ipod, and opened the door. As the door opened a flyer fluttered to the ground. It would appear that a new sushi restaurant has opened up about 3 blocks north of my apartment. I took this as a sign from god and headed north.

Ah. I remember this place, or rather I don’t. See, in the 10+ years I’ve lived in this neighborhood this place must have been something like 6-7 different restaurants. Never went into any of them as I don’t keep kosher and the idea of a burger *without* bacon and cheese is blasphemy in my books.

I beleive the interior is just retrofitted to a generic asian look. Well, an asian-middle eastern fusion as the walls haven’t been changed. But the decor is nice and the tables don’t use tennis balls to level them*. The service was quick and attentive. There was actually a few more people than I would have expected for 1 in the afternoon.

The pricing is very reasonable, from $3.75 for the basic Kappa Maki to $10.50 for the Black Dragon roll. Rather than having about 80 different rolls, the menu is more broad with plenty of Nigiri, Sashimi, and Don. I went for the Dynamic Roll (a Dynamite roll by any other name at $6.95) and a Spicy Tuna roll at $5.75. The Dynamite was very generous, lots of shrimp tempura and not filled out with crab stick. About equal portions of shrimp, avocado and cucumber. Now spicy tuna can be prepared one of two ways that I’ve noticed so far. The first is to basically make the tuna, mayo, and tempura into a thick paste. The second is to roll the tuna and tempura and then dab a bit of spicy mayo on top. The latter method ensures more tuna, but I’ve found that I prefer the former. That aside, while the amount and quality of tuna was above expectations, the spiciness was definitely lacking. I like a little bite, and this failed to deliver.

Finally, I was talked into (oh yeah, twist my arm!) some Green Tea ice cream and Honey Banana. I’d never tried the banana concoction, so I figured what the heck. Out can a breaded, pan fried banana covered in honey. Oh man, it was perfect. Sweet but not overly so. The ice cream was a perfect counter point to it as well, being not on the sweet side of things either.

Overall, nothing to terribly fancy, but clean and tasteful with pricing to match. Thumbs up!

Agree, nothing too fancy, but definitely worthwhile in this neighborhood (I live a couple of blocks south of this place too). Their bento boxes are very filling, and I have trouble finishing them.

dj todd running a sushi site?! can you be any more awesome?

You should head just a little north to Wilson. There’s a nice little sushi place called Kokame right beside Bagel World, maybe 2 blocks west of Bathurst. I’ve eaten there several times. (Not just because it’s a 5 minute walk from my place!)
