It must be Thursday, so it must be lunch with my Sister! It’s getting more and more fun to try and be creative with a location though. We may very well have come close to mining out the restaurants in the general vicinity of Queen and Spadina, which is roughly where we both work.

I had heard of Toshi Sushi from the receptionist at work. Someone had ordered sushi for a meeting and it didn’t look like it came from any of the places nearby I was familiar with. As it turns out, I was right, it came from a place called Toshi Sushi on King street. I was warned, however, that they’re a little expensive.

As it turns out, they are a little expensive. That and they don’t really cater to the usual menu of a cornucopia of maki. This place seems to specialize in Sashimi and Nigiri for the most part. The “special rolls” section of the menu where you go beyond the simple, traditional stuff was pretty expensive too. I passed on the Spider Roll as it was $12 for an 8 piece, and $10 for a 6 piece roll. Pricey.

So I settled on a couple of traditional favorites, the Spicy Tuna for $6.50 and the Kappa Maki for $4.50.  In all honestly, the maki was nothing to write home about. The rice was a little dried out, and felt like it had been sitting out uncovered. The rolls were also on the small side, I wish I had taken a picture next to something to give them scale. Diameter of a quarter. But the Kappa Maki was good, the cucumber tasted fresh and you really can’t mess up something this simple. The Spicy Tuna was a little on the “too spicy” side, and you were left unable to taste the tuna at all. Which is a shame as even though the portions were small it was obviously fresh fish of a high quality. Yeah, that was the other complaint. The amount of tuna was pretty disappointing. Diameter of a pencil.

I can’t honestly say I can recommend Toshi if you’re a Maki fan. The Nigiri looked good, but it wasn’t really what I felt like. There are plenty of better choices only a couple of blocks away on King Street.
