Tokyo Sushi
373 Eglinton Ave W
As previously mentioned, one of my methodologies for finding new restaurants is to bike into a “new” area and let Poynt find something for me. Unfortunately, after a grand total of 65km on my bike this weekend, I needed a break. So instead I laced up the shoes and threw my camera bag over my shoulder. It was time to get a nice long walk in to help stretch out some aching quads.
I decided to keep somewhat close to home and headed out to the Eglinton Ave strip to see what was what. I noticed that there was a new place opening up, but it’s still “coming soon”. But directly across the street is another location in the “Tokyo Sushi” chain. There’s also on on Bloor in the Bathurst/Spadina strip. I’ll get to it eventually. I’ve avoided this one a bit because there is another Tokyo sushi location on Eglinton within walking distance of my place. I wanted to avoid similarity, but it would seem that they’re a little different.
This one feels less like a strictly Japanese/Sushi place and has a fair bit of Korean flavour. This is evidenced by the dishes of bean sprouts and glass noodles. The menu is also littered with Korean dishes like Bibimbap. I stuck with what we do best around here and ordered a Philadelphia Roll ($9.95) and a Spicy “crab” roll at $5.95. First off, the spicy crab was crab stick. Not really a huge surprise that they used stick, but I really wish that restaurants would say so. This roll really brought the spice and the crunch, possibly at the expense of any crab flavour. Still, it was an excellent “cheap” roll.
Up next was the Philadelphia roll. Its been a while since I went with a cream cheese roll, but my body craved fat after all the weekend exercise. I am not one to deny myself. This was a very generous roll. Not only was there a nice large slab of salmon, but crab stick, cucumber, avocado, tobiko, and cheese. I would have used a bit less of the cheese and a bit more avocado, but you can’t go wrong with the quantity and price. I especially like the nice thin layer of rice.
The results are in, so far the Tokyo locations are different enough to justify being so close to each other, and both give a good value. Soon we shall see if the Bloor st. location is up to the challenge!
