Now magazine has an interesting article on sustainable fish and sushi.

Are you getting a raw deal with your sushi?

I don’t really expect that the wait staff would know whether the fish in my sushi was farmed or not, but is it really that difficult for the restaurants to buy “green” fish?

The paragraph that caught my attention:

“The experience also reveals a problem with the fish eco movement thus far: little mention is made of sushi’s carbon footprint. Importing fish from halfway around the world burns a lot more oil than serving stuff caught in local lakes, but that isn’t reflected in the SeaChoice guide. Wareham admits his team is concentrating on saving fish stocks, but he agrees we should choose local options wherever possible.”

Importing anything more than delicacy fish from Japan just seems silly to me. But as long as there are people willing to spend the money, it will continue to happen. Still, the article, like this blog, is offered up for your interpretation.

The camera equipment we use around here

As I take a short break from having had Sushi 3 times this week, I figured I might as well make a quick post about the second most fun part about working on this site.

The most exciting and interesting is obviously getting to eat a lot of great food. But the second best bit is fooling around with cameras. At various points in my life I’ve been surrounded by photographers, pretty good ones at that. I don’t have the drive to learn to really become a photographer, but good tools and a little bit of reading can help me take better pictures and show off the sushi better!

I started out by using my point and shoot camera. It’s a Sony Cybershot DSC-W90. I bought it just over a year ago, and it does take quite nice pictures. 8.1MP and Full 1080 HD images. However, it does have a couple of drawbacks. I hate using the flash as it tends to wash out the pictures. It doesn’t handle low light very well. The most annoying bit though is the Sony propriatary USB interface on it. I need a specific Sony cable to download the pictures.

Shortly after I started this I began thinking “If the photos are that important, maybe it’s time to look at a better camera.” So a couple of weeks ago, I did. After consulting with my friend Harold, I decided on Canons “last years model” of Digital Rebel, the 450D (or XSi as it’s called up here). I now have much greater control over the camera, and can adjust the ISO level and the aperture size with a few clicks of buttons. Restaurants aren’t always well lit, so this little bit helps bring out the best.

I’m no expert, but I’m learning, and you have to have learned something new every day of your life. It’s what keeps it interesting!

Welcome to Toronto-Sushi.com!

It started out as a dream. No, a craving. OK, possibly just a way to kill a little time. It would seem that I eat Sushi at least 3 times a week. I try new rolls nearly every time I eat. I started trying a new restaurant at least once a week. So why not share my thoughts on the places I’ve eaten?

I’m not a coinesseur. I’m just a white guy who happens to like white rice, seafood, and nori. But then, why should my opinion be worth less than an expert? Power to the people!

Expect photos and short reviews. I’ll tell you where I’ve been, and feel free to chime in if you’ve been there before or just have questions! There will most likely be a few of my friends helping out here. I can’t keep all this goodness to myself!
