Vincent Sushi

Vincent Sushi
153 Roncesvalles Ave.

So my sister introduced me to this place at the beginning of summer a couple of years back, and it’s located right around the corner from my friend Christine’s place. But whoa! They’ve moved! The original restaurant was really quite small (seating for 6 plus a window ledge) so when a polish restaurant up the street moved out they decided to pack their bags and move in! The decor still screams black forest rather than mount fuji, but the food is still good!

Going back and doing a place over again makes ordering a little easier. I can go back to my previous review and cross those things off the list. Gotta try and mix things up a bit! You know, I’ve never actually had Sushi Pizza, so I decided to give Vincents a try for $6.95. The salmon was mixed with tempura and spicy mayo and topped with a sliver thin slice of avocado and a reasonable dollop of tobiko (as opposed to the 3 tablespoon quantities I’ve had at other places.)

Next up was the Garden Volcano at $12.95. A little bit more expensive than the usual for me, but lets face it. Christine was paying. The Garden Volcano is essentially a dynamite roll topped with spicy tuna. But wow, I wasn’t expecting this kind of topping. The roll was liberally covered with spicy tuna, mayo, and green onion. The roll was also artistically sliced in a diagonal fashion, which looked neat and did make a couple of the pieces difficult to eat. But wow, it was really quite good. I almost didn’t want to eat it though as it was just so pretty.

A move up the street has opened up much more space, and there was nearly a full house at dinner on a Thursday night. The drinks could have come more timely, and they still have the pay at the front mentality, but the food is still awesome and I cna’t wait to go back!

Natural Sushi

Natural Sushi
714 Yonge St

I haven’t mentioned it here, but my office moved a month or so ago, and now that I’m back into the swing of things with the Sushi, this couldn’t come at a better time. I’m now up at Yonge and Bloor and this opens up a whole new world of Sushi goodness. There are literally dozens of sushi places scattered over the area for me to choose from.

For a first choice, I picked one of the closer locations, as a co-worker who lives in the area uses Natural Sushi as his go-to for Japanese food. A few of us grabbed our coats and headed out earlier this week for lunch, and I was the only one who actually went with sushi as opposed to a bento box of teriyaki or the like. The restaurant itself wasn’t anything fancy, but it was a decent place for lunch. Service was pretty quick and the food was definitely fresh. I’d say the name was just a name though, as I didn’t spot anything specifically organic or anything.

I went with my old standby of Spicy Tuna ($5.59) and another of my favorites, a Green Dragon at $7.99. Sadly the lighting wasn’t so hot and I keep forgetting my real camera at home, so I apologize for the crappy iPhone 4 snaps. The one thing you can see is that each roll came with a generous portion of tempura flakes. Actually, they weren’t even flakes but tempura dust. The first time I dabbed a piece in the soy sauce, the sauce became tempura sludge. It tasted good, but the texture of each roll was a little disappointing as soy sauce was required to moisten it up. The tempura shrimp in the Dragon Roll was quite good though, something that I look out for as usually the quality is pretty low. The generosity didn’t just extend to the tempura flake though, both rolls had a fair bit of either tuna or shrimp, and I think I got my moneys worth.

I’m not sure I’d visit for dinner, but they make a darn good lunch. I think I’d visit again!

Bikkuri Sushi

Bikkuri Sushi
404 College St.

Here’s an interesting coincidence. The last review posted was back in September of 2010. Right about then I bought a brand new road bike and managed to wipe out really badly riding it home. Messed up my right hand pretty badly, to the point that I needed x-rays, splints, and now a few months later, physiotherapy to regain 100% use of my middle digit. But here we are a few months later and I can easily hold chopsticks again. So that means after a lunch time visit with the phsyio doctor, I get to scout around Toronto Western Hospital for sushi.

Back in the day I used to work for a College st computer store as a bench tech. There was a hole in the wall chinese place that did szechuan beef that was to die for. Now, it is Bikkuri sushi and I hit it for the $11.99 all you can eat lunch.

I have to admit that the price is right. For $12, you can get your moneys worth at an AYCE place. Most of the time I really find that when I try for AYCE I’m stuffing myself silly trying to get some value. The contents of the rolls were quite generous, as I went with Spicy Tuna, and Dynamite rolls. The amount of rice was a tad high, probably actually a little better than what you’d expect (ayce places generally try to fill you up on rice) and both rolls were quite good. I’m usually very skeptical about tempura shrimp. I’ve had some pretty bad stuff, but the dynamite roll here was good.

The down side was that the maki was pretty badly rolled. The pieces tended to fall apart, and the ends were downright difficult to eat. But for a quickie lunch, you get what you pay for and I don’t always expect perfection.

Thumbs up for a quick lunch, probably in the middle for anything more expensive.

Tokyo Sushi

Tokyo Sushi
373 Eglinton Ave W

Don’t call it a comeback! (Especially when we were here back in April!)

Mostly because I *have* been here for years, and still eating sushi. But my intake took a bit of a hit over the summer as I spent more time riding my bike and training for my first century ride. But I did manage to stop here and there and take photos and notes, I just never found the time to post.

There are actually 2 “Tokyo Sushi” locations within a 20 minute walk of my apartment. Very early in the history of this site I covered the first, and back a couple of months ago I hit the second. This place has a very Korean feel, as the menu is actually quite diverse containing many Japanese and Korean dishes, and the customary starters are Korean. The glass noodles and bean sprouts were actually pretty notable. I hoovered them up.

But the main show was the sushi! I almost always hit the Salmon Pizza because I’m so addicted, and for $9.95 here this was no exception. Their take was a chopped mix of Salmon, Tempura, Sesame, Cucumber and tobiko, and while it isn’t my favorite format it was quite tasty and gobbled up. I had a craving for Avocado, so out came the Caterpillar roll again for $9.95. This version (as I swear that the caterpillar and the green dragon are interchangeable at different restaurants) had crab stick and unagi topped with avocado. It was good, but nothing to write home about. The presentation was excellent however.

You can tell I was out of practice as I forgot to take a photo of the front of the restaurant, and I forgot my DSLR at home! But Tokyo sushi gets a thumbs up and will get a repeat visit when I’m in that area of Eglinton again.

Sushi On Roncy

Sushi On Roncy
293 Roncesvalles

This review has actually been sitting in here as a draft for almost 3 weeks. Life caught up to me, and stuff had to get done. Then I went and crashed my new bike so typing was rather difficult on a sprained wrist.

One of my sushi buddies, Christine, lives in an area with a few restaurants, and she alerted me to the fact that a new place had opened up, Sushi on Roncy. Obviously run by the same folks as Sushi on Bloor, the menu was pretty varied. Coincidentally, the last time I visited Christine to help fix her computer, we went out for dinner and ate at the restaurant that was previously in this location.

I opted for the traditional Spicy Tuna ($5.25) and a Green Dragon ($9.95). Suffice it to say, the sushi was good enough that I forgot to take some of my usual pictures and gobbled up what was in front of me! The Green Dragon was especially good, as the tempura shrimp tasted quite good. I find that sometimes (possibly because it’s fried) you don’t get the highest quality shrimp. Here, we did.

Served on a nice boat, I would definitely come here again. But before that I have to visit Vincent Sushi in their new expanded location!
