Minako Organic Japanese Restaurant
2154 Mission St
San Francisco, CA
So a couple of weeks ago, I spent a week hanging out with friends and American co-workers in sunny California. I took the opportunity to wander around San Francisco for a few days and what a surprise, I ate a fair bit of sushi.
There are probably as many sushi places in San Fran as there are in Toronto, and certainly more “authentic” restaurants. But the one thing I noticed overall was that the price and quality were about on par with Toronto. I’m sure there are more high end places, but that really isn’t the focus of this blog anyhow.
Since I was there, and a tourist, I naturally brought my camera with me. But unfortunately, I didn’t even think to bring it with me on my first night, when I had dinner with my friend Chiara. All of the pictures here were taken with my Blackberry Bold 9700 under less than favorable conditions.
Chiara led me out to The Mission, which was a sketchy neighborhood at best. Heck, the crowd around the BART station put Parkdale to shame. But once we arrived at the restaurant, it was really worth it. While I personally think that “Organic” is a gimmick, and that my body runs on preservatives, I’m not going to turn my nose up at an organic meal. Minako is a small place, maybe half a dozen 4 seat tables, and curiously (though I’m told this is common for SF) you have to walk through the kitchen to reach the restroom. For the first time ever, we present a video of my walk from the table to the washroom!
I dined on Tempura Yam, Shrimp Teryaki (which disappeared into my stomach before I remembered to take a picture) and a very interesting take on Spicy Tuna maki. Note the brown rice, and the green eggs. The fish roe was flavoured with wasabi, which gave it the spicy kick. A bit too much for me, I’m afraid.
One thing I have to note was how fun the menu was to read, and the waitress was really fun to talk to. Big thumbs up for more of a “Japanese restaurant” than a “sushi joint” experience.
I’m behind on my posting, I fully admit it. But it’s been for a good reason. I spent nearly a week in San Francisco, and I sampled a LOT of great sushi. I even took pictures of most of the places. But before I left I had lunch with my mom again and took this as an opportunity to introduce her to a few new things.
I found Sapporo Sushi more or less by accident when I noticed that there were a lot of sushi places in the neighborhood when I was checking out Sushi Bong. There was no real rhyme or reason for choosing here, and thats the beauty of discovery! First up was something that Mom really enjoys, Salmon Pizza ($8.95). This was a very different method of making it, as it was on a sheet of nori, the “crust” wasn’t overly fried, and the salmon was more of a mince. Honestly, I didn’t care for it, but that might be more because it wasn’t what I was used to. Still, I gave it a chance. Next up was the first experiment. I fed my mom Unagi.
See, I can see how us white folk might not like the idea of eating smoked eel. But if you don’t try it, how would you know? So out comes the Tiger Roll at $11.95 Basically it’s an unagi roll topped with unagi and shrimp. Very, very tasty. The chef had the slices of eel nice and thin, and they just melted in the mouth. The best part was, mom guessed at what I was feeding her, and didn’t balk. She likes it! She likes it!
Finally was the Green Tea Ice Cream, another first for the maternal unit, and it was a success as well! So two thumbs up for a successful lunch!
Sunday was a nicer, sunnier day than the gray dullness of Saturday, so I made sure to venture out of the house to get my weekly dose of vitamin D. Since I was out, I might as well pop by the office to grab an external HD, and a book. Since I was already getting computer gear, I do need a new wifi adapter for my HTPC. Since I’m on Yonge St. I should stop and get some lunch. Since I’m getting lunch, why not sushi? See how my brain works? It’s a complicated thought process where I talk myself into spending more money. Of course, if you buy that you’ll have to ignore the fact that I left the house with my DSLR.
The two places I meant to check out were both closed, so I just started wandering up Yonge. If there’s anything that Sushipalooza has taught me, it’s that there is plenty of sushi in this area. I chose Sushi Sky on the basis that I saw it first. I almost kinda wish I didn’t. Allow me to elaborate.
First off, the food was good. No major complaints there, but there was one waiter for the entire place, and it appeared to be busier than they anticipated. In a nutshell, service sucked. The guy was in a pissy mood, and people were waiting to be seated. Having said that, I was able to get my order in fairly easily and I opted for one of my favorites, Salmon Pizza at $6.99 and what they refer to as a “Dragon C” but we would know it as a Green Dragon for $9.99. What can I say? I knew I needed some extra “good” fat in my diet.
The Salmon pizza was excellent. Nice large slices of salmon, and just enough mayo. There was a bit too much of the Teryaki (or is it Oyster? I should find out.) sauce on it though, some of the pieces did fall apart just a little bit. This isn’t that much of a problem when you love it as much as I do and you’re shoveling it back. The Green Dragon was a minor disappointment as well, as there was a large ratio of Rice to everything else. It was tasty rice, but for $10 I expect a bit more cucumber or avocado to fill it out, not rice.
The icing on the cake after the slow service was the fact that I sometimes cross my legs while I eat and read at the same time. My left knee touched the underside of the table for a few minutes. When it came away it had a nice pre-chewed piece of gum on it. A quick manual touch scan showed it had neighbors. Ew.
Food wasn’t bad, but it’s too close to Sushi Tower or a dozen other places to go back.
Ah, spring. Spring is in the air. Have I mentioned that I work for a pretty cool employer? Also, my boss is pretty cool, for a guy who was once from Detroit. On Wednesday I noted that the weather was supposed to be gorgeous on Thursday. So I duly called my Boss and asked if I could take said gorgeous day off. Vacation day granted. These days, the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon for me is to strap on the helmet and hop on my bike. Ride around for an hour or so and then stop for a nice sushi lunch. There is an awesome bike path down Beverly st, and it’s the one I use to get from uptown to downtown. It cuts right through Baldwin village, and if there is a more picturesque hideaway in the downtown, I have yet to find it.
I knew there were at least 3 sushi type places in that block, one of which we visited last summer. So I basically rode down blind with my camera and thought “We’ll find what we find.” What I found was a little Japanese restaurant that serves far more than just sushi. But sushi is ideal exercise food, straight up carbs and protein. They had a nice lunch special type handroll set for $9.25 that included Salmon, Spicy Tuna, and California. First up came the soup and salad and a nice big glass of water at my request. I’m still shaking off the winter cobwebs and my wind needs all the help it can get. So for once I actually ate my Miso, or “Salt Soup” as I usually refer to it. Water and salt successfully replenished deliciously!
At this point I should note that I was dining under an utterly fake and somewhat tacky diorama of Mount Fuji. It was so silly it was charming. A picture would never do it justice.
Next came the actual hand rolls. First things to look for were good. They were well wrapped. I even played connoisseur and had a pinch of the rice to check for excessive vinegar. Nope, it was perfect! The California roll was about what you’d expect, the usual crab stick, cucumber, tobiko, and cucumber. The Salmon was only very slightly disappointing as there was no avocado. The spicy tuna, however, was quite unlike any spicy tuna I’d ever had before. I’m not sure what the mayo mixture was that gave it the kick, but the tuna almost tasted (gasp) cooked. I honestly wasn’t sure what to make of it. Don’t get me wrong, it was good. No thumbs down. But it was very unexpected. This may be something I have to have again and sit at the bar and quiz the chef.
Overall it was a pleasant little lunch with good service that came to a whopping $15 after tip. Generous portions and yummy food makes for a happy sushi man!
Basically an article about how the Japanese have bacteria that digest seaweed properly and “we” don’t. Thats fine with me, I enjoy eating it. Digestion is not mandatory. :)
